Let's celebrate Fair Housing month, on April 10th, 1959 Colorado became the first state in the nation to pass fair housing laws. Sixty years later, Colorado’s Fair Housing laws prohibit discrimination based on Disability, race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, familial status, religion, national origin, or ancestry. Colorado’s fair housing laws even predate federal fair housing laws- Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, also known as the Fair Housing Act (FHA) will be 51 years old on April 11th.
April is Fair Housing Month and it’s imperative to remain educated about this topic. Discrimination in the Real Estate Industry is prevalent in people’s daily lives. The Fair Housing Act has helped working families of all races and backgrounds find affordable housing, helped break patterns of segregation and bring diverse communities, but there is still more to be done.
The Colorado Civil Rights Division is collaborating with the Division of Real Estate to help Colorado Consumers understand the applicability of Fair Housing Laws, identify common issues related to fair housing, and explain the rights and responsibilities of the parties involved in housing transactions when it comes to fair housing.
